New Zealand Crushes Pakistan by 5 Wickets, Takes 2-0 Lead in T20 Series

New Zealand Crushes Pakistan by 5 Wickets, Takes 2-0 Lead in T20 Series

In a thrilling display of power-hitting, New Zealand’s men’s cricket team crushed Pakistan by five wickets in the second T20 match on Tuesday, securing a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. The home team chased down Pakistan’s total of 135-9 in a rain-shortened 15-over game, reaching 137-5 with 11 balls to spare at Dunedin’s University Oval.

Explosive Opening Partnership Sets the Tone

The highlight of New Zealand’s innings was the explosive opening partnership between Tim Seifert and Finn Allen. The duo unleashed a six-hitting spree, with seven of the first eight scoring shots clearing the boundary. Remarkably, Seifert started cautiously, playing out a maiden over from Pakistan’s star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi. However, Allen quickly shifted gears, smashing three sixes in the second over bowled by Mohammad Ali.

Seifert then took center stage, hammering 26 runs off Afridi’s second over, including four massive sixes. The opener, who had top-scored with 44 in New Zealand’s nine-wicket win in Christchurch, was eventually dismissed for a blistering 45 off just 22 balls. Allen followed soon after, scoring 38 off 16 deliveries, with both openers hitting five sixes each.

Middle-Order Stumble Before Sealing the Win

New Zealand faced a brief hiccup in the middle overs, losing four wickets in the span of four overs. However, Mitch Hay’s unbeaten 21 ensured the team crossed the finish line comfortably, securing the victory with ease.

Pakistan’s Innings: A Mixed Performance

Earlier in the match, Pakistan struggled to build momentum after being sent in to bat. Opener Hasan Nawaz was dismissed for a duck for the second time in the series, leaving the visitors at 19-2 in the fourth over. Captain Salman Agha spearheaded a recovery with a top score of 46 off 28 balls, including four boundaries and three sixes. Shadab Khan contributed a quickfire 26 off 14 balls, while Shaheen Shah Afridi remained unbeaten on 22 off 14 deliveries.

Despite their efforts, Pakistan’s total of 135-9 in 15 overs proved insufficient against New Zealand’s aggressive batting lineup. Four New Zealand bowlers—Ben Sears, Jimmy Neesham, and two others—claimed two wickets each. Sears and Neesham were recalled to the side, replacing Tim Robinson and Kyle Jamieson.

 Series Outlook and Team Changes

New Zealand now has a chance to clinch the series if they win the third T20 match, scheduled for Friday in Auckland. Pakistan made one change to their lineup, bringing in seamer Haris Rauf in place of leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed.

Rain Delays Start

The match began 90 minutes late due to rain at University Oval, but the delay did little to dampen the excitement as New Zealand’s openers lit up the ground with their explosive batting.

With this commanding performance, New Zealand has firmly taken control of the series, leaving Pakistan with a mountain to climb in the remaining matches. Cricket fans can look forward to more high-octane action as the series moves to Auckland for the third T20 clash.
